Vertebrates
Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates...Vertebrates have backbones. Invertebrates do not have backbones.
What are Bones?-All bones are made of a hard kind of body tissue.
-Your body would just be a big soft blob without bones -Bones are alive and made of cells -The skeleton supports and protects the body -A spine is the same as a backbone -The skull is at the top of the spine -There are 206 bones in the human skeleton. -Cartilage is soft tissue that keeps bones from rubbing against each other. Your nose and ears are made of cartilage -Joints are the places where bones meet. Joints move in different ways and cartilage helps the joints move. |
Grouping Vertebrates
There are 5 groups of vertebrates
Mammals -Mammals have hair on their bodies
-Mammals are warm blooded (their body temperature does not change with the weather). -Mammals breathe with lungs. -Mammals make milk to feed their babies -Almost all mammals are born alive. They do not hatch from eggs. -Examples: Humans, Dolphins, Moles, Rabbits, Lions |
Birds-Birds are warm blooded (like mammals)
-Birds have feathers -Birds have wings instead of front legs -Birds have hollow bones -Birds have beaks and no teeth -Birds breathe with lungs (like mammals) -Birds lay eggs with hollow shells -Examples: Geese, Duck, Bald Eagle, Hummingbird |
Fish-Fish are cold blooded (Their body temperature changes with
the water temperature) -Fish live in the water their whole lives (the only group of invertebrates that does) -Fish have fins and strong tails to swim -Most fish have scales -Fish breathe with gills instead of lungs -Most fish lay eggs -Examples: Catfish, Crappie, Tuna, Trout, Shark |
Reptiles-Reptiles have dry skin with scales
-Reptiles are cold blooded (Their body temperature changes with the weather) -Reptiles breathe with lungs -Mose reptiles lay eggs, but their eggs are not hard like birds -Baby reptiles look like their parents from the time they hatch -Examples: Turtle, Crocodile, Snakes, Alligator, Gecko |
Amphibians-Amphibians live in damp places
-Amphibians have smooth, moist skin -Amphibians are cold blooded -Amphibians lay eggs that are like jelly. Eggs are born in water so they don't dry out. -Amphibian babies are born in water and look different from their parents (tadpoles change into frogs over time) -Most have gills when born, but soon grow lungs or breathe through their skin. -Examples: Frog, Newt, Salamander, Toad |
