Pioneering Missouri1673- Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet are the 1st Europeans to step foot into Missouri.
1682- Robert Cavalier took place of Louisiana Purchase (Missouri is in Louisiana Purchase) 1724- Fort Orleans is built on the Missouri River 1750- Ste. Genevieve is founded. It is the 1st permanent white settlement in Missouri. 1762- Spain takes control of the Louisiana Territory. 1764- St. Louis is founded by Pierre Laclede. 1769- St. Charles founded as a trading post. 1770- Spanish government officially takes control of Louisiana Territory 1803- The Louisiana Purchase is bought by America from France (We will study more later) 1804- The Lewis and Clark Expedition sets out from Saint Louis. 1808- The 1st newspaper in Missouri is written. 1811- The New Madrid Earthquake is the worst earthquake in US history. 1812- The Territory of Missouri is formed. 1813-The 5 original counties of Missouri are organized: Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, St. Charles, St. Louis, and Ste. Genevieve. 1817- The 1st steamboat to make it to Saint Louis arrives on the Mississippi River 1818- Missouri asks the US Congress to make it a state. 1820- Missouri Compromise. Missouri becomes a state. 1826- Jefferson City becomes the state capital 1835- Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) is born 1839- The Geyer Act- The foundation of Missouri Public Schools was approved. 1841- The University of Missouri was formed. It was the 1st state university west of the Mississippi. 1847- Saint Louis connects to the telegraph 1849- Saint Louis, Independence, Westport, and St. Joseph become jumping off points for the gold rush in the west. 1849- The Cholera epidemic strikes Saint Louis- 4000 people died. 1851- The Pacific Railroad begins construction from Saint Louis to Jefferson City and westward. 1857- The Dred Scott Decision handed down. 1860- The Pony Express started its first run from St. Joseph to Sacramento, California 1861- The Civil War Battle of Wilson's Creek occurred near Springfield. |

It is southeast of Hickory County and northwest of Greene County. About 35,571 people live in my county. Each county has its own county courthouse. My county courthouse is at Lebanon.

-It was once an indian village called Kickapoo Prairie -Has many industries and colleges -3rd largest city in Missouri -Nicknamed "The Queen City" |

-Named for President Thomas Jefferson -The state capital is on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River -Located in the center of our state |
Columbia-Located in the center of Missouri
-Mainly an educational center. -University of Missouri is located in Columbia |
Saint Joseph-Located on the bluffs of the Missouri River
-In the pioneer days, it was the starting point of the Pony Express mail service -Now it is an important city for grain, manufacturing, and meat packing. |
Joplin-In southwest Missouri
-Business and agricultural center -Early growth was due to zinc and lead mining -Home of George Washington Carver |

-Settlers came to work in the lead mines to make salt. |
