Invertebrates
What do invertebrates have in common?
-They have no spine
-Invertebrates have more than one kind of cell
-They all move their bodies in some way
-They need oxygen, but do not breathe like we do.
-Most have symmetry, which means both sides of their body look alike
-They are cold-blooded
-They must eat to stay live

Classification of Invertebrates
Sponges (Poriferans)-They have only one kind of cell and are not symmetrical
-Young sponges swim, but adults stay in one spot -A sponge takes food from the water through pores. The wates goes in through the pores and the sponge eats the small food. |
Sea Jellies, Corals, and Sea Anemones (Cnidarians)-They have stinging tentacles
-They use their tenticles to catch food to eat -Some are very small and others are huge -Sea Anemones move around with a foot |
Sea Urchins, Sea Stars, and Sand Dollars (Echinoderms)-Ocean invertebrates with rough skin
-They have tiny feet that help them crawl and eat -They eat plants, other animals, and dead things -Most have a body with 5 parts They can live in shallow or deep water Sand Dollar

Octopuses, Squids, Snails, and Clams (Mollusks)-They have strong bodies
-They live on water and land -Some have a soft body and others have a hard shell -Octopuses have 8 legs that they use to catch prey -Octopuses and squid shoot water from their body to help them swim -Snails and slugs are slow and make slime to help them slide -Snails and slugs have a special tool in their mouth to help them eat -Snails have one shell, but mollusks have 2 shells called bivalves |
Worms (Annelids)-Earthworms have a long, soft body. They make holes in the dirt as they move. The holes help plants grow.
-A leech feeds on blood and moves like a wave -Worms live on land and in water. -Some worms that live in the ocean have stinging tentacles that kill corals and other invertebrates. -Some worms in the ocean can grow to several feet. |
Insects, Spiders, Lobsters, and Millipedes(Arthropods)-Arthropods have a skin-like shell, different body parts, and moving legs.
-Insects have 3 body parts, 2 antennae, and 6 legs. Many insects also have wings. They come from eggs and their bodies change shape 3 or 4 times. Some are pollinators (We will learn more about this later) -Arachnids have 8 legs for walking, 2 body parts, and a special mouth so they can eat other animals. Spiders make webs to catch insects -Crustaceans have many pairs of walking legs. Most live in water. They are omnivores. -Millipedes and Centipedes have many legs, but look like worms. Centipedes have 2 front claws to poison their prey. |
